Jan Altmann

Topic:  Finding the Female Voice in Non-Fiction

Jan Altmann has a PhD in Comparative Literature from Murdoch University. She is now semi-retired, but spent many years teaching English, Literature, Art History, Visual Literacy, Art and Cultural Theory and Women’s Studies. Her main interest is now in Women’s History. She has written many art reviews and catalogue essays. In 2011she published a book of poetry critiquing the language and archetypes in attitudes to women entitled Wisdom and Wildness: Two Creations of Eve.

In 1999 she edited the catalogue for a major exhibition of Women’s Art entitled Rebirth, which was held to celebrate the centenary of women’s suffrage in Western Australia.  She presented a paper at a seminar to mark the same occasion. She co-authored a book on Western Australian women’s art of the colonial era entitled Out of the Sitting Room: Western Australian Women’s Art 1829-1914. In 1996 she presented a paper entitled Space and the Discourse of Gender in Women’s Art at the Australian Women’s Studies Association Conference.

Jan Napier

Topic:  Metaphors in Poetry


Jan Napieris a Western Australian writer. Jan has published two books of short stories, Smiles To Go, and All The Fun Of The Fair.

Her poetry has been published in Westerly, Poetry New Zealand, (NZ), Maintenant, (USA), Prayers of a Secular World, Love Poems 2013,

The High Window, (England), plus other anthologies and journals both here and overseas. Jan’s first poetry collection, Thylacine, was launched at Fremantle Arts Centre in 2015.
