I believe I was born to write as I started writing stories at a very early age, my first novel (of 30 pages) receiving accolades from Primary School teachers and being retained by the school for ten years as an example of the school’s Writing Project. Nurtured correctly by school staff from that point on, there has never been a time that I have not been writing something. It is a compulsion, and I firmly believe you do not choose to write – writing chooses you.
Many years later, having completed numerous writing and editing courses through TAFE and UWA, and with five completed novels sitting in a cupboard, I decided it was time to do more than just write. I began to submit, winning the ABC Regional Poetry Award with a ballad ‘The Horse From Ethel Creek’, the National Horror Writers Award with “All in the Family’ (Short Story), and placing equal third in the Tom Howard International Mystery Writers Competition with my second novel ‘Whistling Gums’, all in my first year.
Published frequently since, I branched out and conducted writing courses for TAFE for a number of years, tutored the Society of Women Writers Creative Writing Class for five years, and ran Poetry and Creative Fiction workshops before being approached to write training material for the Emergency Services full time. Over the years I slowly shifted focus and, being aware of the difficulty of being accepted for publication in such an unpredictable market, I opened a publishing business with the aim of promoting Western Australian authors, and began providing publishing opportunities and manuscript services to those endeavouring to see their work in print.
Linellen Press has been operating since July 2000 and has produced numerous quality books under its flying horse imprint. Book categories range from Cookery, Fiction, Non-fiction, Children’s novels, and Poetry. The Choice Words Writers Handbooks series was the first publication released. Books can be purchased on-line, further helping authors reach the worldwide market.
